KEYS ENERGY SERVICES AND THE CITY OF KEY WEST DEDICATE GRINNELL STREET POCKET PARK

04/14/2004 ~ Keys Energy Services (KEYS) and the City of Key West dedicated the Grinnell Street Pocket Park on Tuesday, April 13th at 3:00 p.m. The 1950s substation on the corner of Grinnell and Angela streets was de-energized in July 2003.

KEYS removed all of the substation equipment, and with the help of the local neighborhood association planted native fruit trees, added sod and mulch, and installed a decorative perimeter fence to better blend the park into its surrounding area.

Utility Board chairman Robert Padron is proud to see, “KEYS and the City of Key West working together for the betterment of the community.” He added that, “this is a superb example of two public agencies working together for the benefit of both agencies’ common citizens.”

In addition to native fruit trees and landscaping, this is KEYS first Pocket Park to feature artistic sculptures on a 6-month rotating basis from the recent Art in the Park exhibition.

The Grinnell Street Pocket Park features two sculptures, “Openings” by Larry Estridge of Key West and “Human Situations II” by Cecilia Lueza of Miami, Florida. The Pocket park on the corner of Flagler Avenue and 18th Street features a sculpture entitled “Viking” by Tim Marshal from Key West.

This is the third substation in a series of four that KEYS will lease to the City of Key West to establish Pocket Parks. Two other substations on 18th and 8th streets have already been turned into Pocket Parks. The fourth substation is located on Louisa Street and is projected to be removed and converted into a Pocket Park in 2005.

KEYS is retiring these substation because they are older, utilize outdated technology, and they can not carry the electrical loads of the newer upgraded substations.
