03/06/2017 ~ The Historic Florida Keys Foundation recently presented Keys Energy Services (KEYS) with a Preservation Award for the renovations to its Service Building at 1001 James Street, Key West. The award was the only one presented to a 2016 commercial renovation.

The Historic Florida Keys Foundation is a nonprofit organization that since 1981 has applied the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation to its annual selection of noteworthy Florida Keys renovations. Recipients of the award receive a ceramic star to affix to the exterior of their building that represents a tie rod, which in construction is used to strengthen a structure.

The $6.2-million renovation project returned the midcentury modern aesthetic to the exterior of KEYS’ Service Building to reference the 1950s style when the building was originally constructed. The project was designed by Bender & Associates and executed by Biltmore Construction, with Patricia Baldus of LEAF acting as the interior designer.
