STATE APPROVES UTILITY BOARD ELECTION CHANGES; ALL KEYS' CUSTOMERS NOW ELIGIBLE TO SERVE ON AND CAST VOTE FOR BOARD

06/07/2017 ~ The State of Florida officially ratified changes to the Enabling Act that governs the Utility Board and Keys Energy Services (KEYS) on Tuesday, June 6th, regarding the election of Board members.

The changes include:

- A Utility Board consisting of five-members, with three members having residency requirements in the City of Key West (precincts 1-10) and two members having residency requirements in unincorporated Monroe County from Stock Island to the north easternmost end of the Seven-Mile Bridge (precincts 11-17). Previously the five-member Utility Board could only be comprised of residents of the City of Key West.

- A Utility Board elected by all voters from Key West to the north easternmost end of the Seven-Mile Bridge (precincts 1 – 17). Previously the Utility Board was elected only by residents of the City of Key West.

The changes required ratification by the Florida State Legislature. KEYS worked with Representative Holly Raschein to submit the changes during the 2017 legislative session. The changes will take place with the 2018 and 2020 election cycles.

“This is an historic change,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS’ General Manager and CEO. “Since the late 1960s only Key West residents have been able to serve on and vote for the Utility Board, now all of our customers will have that right,” she said, adding, “This change could not have happened without the support of Representative Raschein and her staff, Kate DeLoach and Erin Muir.”

Tejeda also recognized the Utility Board by saying, “the current Board could have taken the easy way out and added two members from the Keys. Instead they decided to keep government small and efficient maintaining a five-member Board. This means two of them made a decision selflessly that they will definitely not be back for another term.”
