KEYS ENERGY SERVICES REACHES GOAL – OVER 27,000 SHADE TREES HAVE BEEN PLANTED SINCE 1994

04/26/2004 ~ Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) customers lined up early Saturday morning for the opening of the Tenth Annual Tree Giveaway at KEYS Service Building in Key West and at the Cudjoe Key Diesel Site on Blimp Road, Cudjoe Key.

Eager customers claimed there free shade trees by about 10:30 a.m. at both locations. Customers had 14 different tree species to choose from, including Gumbo Limbo, Mahogany, and Seagrape.

The program, which began in 1994, is part of a nationwide public power program called Tree Power. The national goal was to plant one tree for every public power customer for a total of 16 million trees. On a local level, after this year’s tree giveaway KEYS met its goal to plant a tree for every customer in its service area – that is more than 27,500 trees.

Not only has KEYS helped to beautify countless homes in the Lower Keys with their free shade trees, but the shade they provide helps promote energy conservation by improving energy efficiency - which ultimately reduces cooling costs and saves money on monthly electric bills.

KEYS gives a special thanks to the volunteer Master Gardeners from the Monroe County Extension Service who helped answer questions about the trees at both locations.
