08/05/2004 ~ Keys Energy Services (KEYS) advises its customers that the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative (FKEC) will be inspecting and replacing the overhead shield wire on the main transmission poles along U.S. Highway 1, from Tavernier to Marathon, over the next 10 or more weeks.

While the replacement of the shield wire is not anticipated to result in an interruption of service, a fluctuation and/or loss of power could take place due to worker error.

FKEC has hired a contractor specializing in both aerial and land-based repair of overhead power lines. The helicopter and bucket truck crews will work in unison to replace 43 miles of the wire, weather permitting.

The shield wire, or static wire, provides lightning protection for the main transmission lines. The segment being replaced has been in service for 25 years.

Residents are advised to drive safely while this work is in progress.
