04/18/2005 ~ Keys Energy Services (KEYS) is hosting its Eleventh Annual Tree Giveaway on Saturday, April 23rd, from 8:30 till 11:00 a.m. at KEYS Service Building in Key West and at the Cudjoe Key Diesel Site on Blimp Road, Cudjoe Key.

The giveaway is on a first-come, first-serve basis for all KEYS customers, who will have their choice of two free shade trees each.

There will be 15 different tree species to choose from, including Gumbo Limbo, Mahogany, Pigeon Plum, Seagrape, and Wild Tamarind, ranging from 15 to 60 feet at mature height.

In addition to beautifying the community, KEYS recognizes the additional benefits of planting trees:

- Trees are a natural air filter, removing dust and “greenhouse” gases such as carbon dioxide, while adding oxygen.

- Properly planted trees provide shade and windbreaks that can save you money on your energy bill.

- A tree’s root system can help prevent damaging soil erosion from rain and wind.

- Trees provide new wildlife habitats.

KEYS Tree Giveaway, which began in 1994, is part of a nationwide public power program called TREE POWER sponsored by the American Public Power Association (APPA). The national goal is to plant one tree for every public power customer for a total of 16 million trees. KEYS received the Golden Tree Award from the APPA for reaching its goal of planting more than 27,500 trees, or one for every customer it serves, in 2004.

APPA is the national service organization representing more than 2,000 community-and state-owned electric utilities that provide electricity to 43 million Americans.
