04/26/2005 ~ Gayle D. “Swifty” Swofford, Utility Board Member, announced today that he will not seek re-election to the Group Two seat on the Utility Board of the City of Key West in the fall elections.

“At age 72, I feel I’m still young enough to change direction in my life,” Swofford said. “I am looking forward to spending more time at our cabin in the Smoky Mountains, especially during the summertime.”

Swofford was elected to the Utility Board in 1997 and re-elected in 2001 when he ran without opposition. During his eight-year tenure Swofford supported capital improvements that dramatically increased reliability, the utility’s name change, and customer satisfaction surveys to help Keys Energy Services (KEYS) be responsive to the community it serves.

Carl Jansen, KEYS General Manager & CEO, said Swofford will be missed. “Gayle has offered valuable insight with a real focus on the customer.”

Swofford thanks KEYS staff and the rate payers for making his most recent two terms a success.

“The improvements at KEYS in recent years give credit to a work force that’s highly professional,” Swofford said, “It has truly been a pleasure to work here. I am grateful to the people of Key West for giving me the opportunity to serve four terms, two as Chairman in the late 70s and two as a Board Member the last eight years.”

“Now I will pass this opportunity along to someone else,” he added.
