OVERNIGHT TIELINE MAINTENANCE TO RESULT IN PLANNED POWER OUTAGE; LOCAL GENERATION WILL BE INITIATED

06/01/2005 ~ Preventative infrared studies of the transmission line (tieline) have detected a heat anomaly, or “hot spot”, in a Marathon substation within the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative territory. A special infrared video camera was used to detect this anomaly, which if left unfixed would cause equipment failure resulting in a power outage.

In order to avoid an unplanned transmission line outage, Keys Energy Services (KEYS) will be de-energizing the tieline on Monday, June 6th, to allow for necessary repairs to be made to the system. In order to inconvenience the least amount of customers as possible, said repairs will be made during the early morning hours at approximately 2:00 a.m.

KEYS will initiate local generation while these repairs are being made. In accordance with the 60 percent On-Island Backup Generation Policy established by the Utility Board, KEYS on-island generation will only be able to supply 60 percent of the area’s peak power requirements. While early morning power requirements are significantly lower than those during the peak hours of the day, KEYS urges all of its customers to practice conservation measures throughout the night (i.e.: higher thermostat settings on air conditioner’s) to prevent the need for rotating power outages.

KEYS regrets any inconveniences experienced as a result of this planned outage.
