09/28/2005 ~ Keys Energy Services (KEYS) is celebrating Public Power Week, October 2 – 8, along with more than 2,000 other electric utilities that collectively provide electricity on a not-for-profit basis to 43 million Americans.

Public Power Week honors KEYS community ownership, which results in reliable, affordable electricity for citizens and businesses. It also recognizes the economic, social, and environmental contributions of a community-owned power system.

Public Power Week is a national, annual event sponsored in conjunction with the American Public Power Association (APPA) in Washington, D.C. APPA is the service organization for community- and stated-owned electric utilities.

“It’s hard to imagine life without electricity,” said Robert R. Padron, Chairman of the Utility Board of the City of Key West, Florida. “Electricity makes everything we do easier and better. And having a community-owned electric system to provide our power also makes our lives better because the Utility Board can make decisions locally and use our resources in ways that best suit our needs.”

“After Hurricane’s Dennis, Katrina, and Rita,” Padron added, “our customers have seen first hand how KEYS is committed to providing the best service possible – no matter what.”

KEYS has been the public power provider for Key West and the Lower Florida Keys since 1943.
