10/31/2005 ~ As a result of Hurricane Wilma, meter reading by Keys Energy Services (KEYS) personnel was not possible for some billing cycles in the month of October. The October energy bill for customers from Cudjoe to Sunshine Key will reflect a conservative estimate based upon their usage for the month of September.

The formula for the estimated energy bill consists of multiplying the number of days in the billing cycle by the average daily usage for the previous month (September); KEYS then reduced this total by 12 percent. The 12 percent reduction reflects two factors: KEYS has determined that of the customers who were able to have their meters read, their usage was down an average of seven percent from September, and a conservative cushion of five percent was added so as not to over bill customers. True-ups will be made in the November billing, once meters are read, so that those customers with estimated bills can be billed for any differences from their actual usage.

KEYS has had to utilize bill estimates in the past, most recently after Hurricane Georges, when meter reading was hampered. Customers are urged to call KEYS’ Customer Programs section should they require further clarification or have additional questions about their energy bill. Customers with questions should call KEYS at (305) 295-1000 and ask to be connected to the Customer Programs section.
