01/04/2006 ~ On December 30, 2005, Mr. Leonard H. Knowles, vice chairman of the Utility Board of the City of Key West, succumbed to illness and brought to a close a distinguished career of public service.

Mr. Knowles was first elected to the Utility Board in 1991, and most recently served as vice chairman. He retired in 1998 from Monroe County where he was Chief Deputy in the Property Appraiser’s office. He was employed by Keys Energy Services (KEYS), then known as City Electric System, from 1959 to 1987, retiring as Superintendent of the Meter and Commercial department.

Mr. Knowles served as Director and President of the Board of Directors of the Southernmost Federal Credit Union and also served on the employees Pension Board for the City of Key West. He was an active member of the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) and the American Public Power Association (APPA).

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire KEYS family are with the Knowles family during this difficult time,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS General Manager & CEO.

Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Key West on Thursday, January 5th, at 11:00 a.m. with a burial at the Key West City Cemetery to follow.
