DRY, BLUSTERY CONDITIONS RESULT IN UTILITY POLE FIRES, OUTAGES THROUGHOUT KEYS ENERGY SERVICES’ SERVICE AREA

01/18/2006 ~ Recent dry, blustery weather caused numerous utility pole fires and power outages throughout Keys Energy Services (KEYS) territory late in the evening, Tuesday, January 17th, and during the morning hours on Wednesday, January 18th.

The combination of dry, windy weather increases the likelihood of salt and sediment building up on utility poles and hardware which results in either pole and/or cross-arm (the wooden fixtures mounted perpendicular to the utility poles) fires. Without steady, pounding rains the build up of salt and sediments remain on the equipment and act as a conductor for the electricity running through the electric lines. Light, misting rains will then “track” the electricity from the lines to the wooden cross-arms and/or poles resulting in pole fires and power outages.

KEYS crews have been in the field throughout the night working to address these fires and the resultant power outages.

KEYS regret any inconveniences experienced as a result of these outages.
