02/09/2006 ~ In an Organizational Meeting of the Utility Board on Wednesday, February 8th, Lou Hernandez was elected as the Vice Chairman of the Board.

Hernandez has served on the Utility Board since 1997. He is the Executive Director of HELPLINE, Inc., a crisis intervention and information referral telephone hotline in Monroe County. Upon graduation from Texas A&M University, Hernandez was commissioned by the United States Army and served as an Infantry Officer in Vietnam. After completing his Armed Services commitment, he secured a Federal internship with the U.S. Department of Transportation in the Human Resources Development areas. Hernandez worked with several Federal agencies, completing his career in Washington as the Director of Training and Employee Development with the General Services Administration.

Hernandez moved to Key West in 1983 and has served as president of the Old Island Restoration Foundation, Chairman of the Historic Architectural Review Commission, Chairmen of the Monroe County Democratic Party, Secretary/Treasurer of the Key West Redevelopment Land Agency, Director of the Private Industry Council of Dade/Monroe, member of the Key West AIDS Memorial Board of Directors, president of the Key West Business Guild, and Vice Chair of the Citizenís Review Board of the City of Key West.

The Board also approved amended committee appointments for the 2005-2006 calendar year to reflect recent changes to the composition of the Utility Board. Board committees address issues in which the Utility Board and Keys Energy Services (KEYS) Staff are in the process of developing, as well as issues that would help KEYS better deal with a deregulated business environment.

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place at 5:00 p.m., February 8th, in the Louis Carbonell Board Room of the William Arnold Service Building, 1001 James Street, Key West.
