03/10/2006 ~ A 133-metric ton combustion turbine generator, the largest component of the new high-efficiency power plant the Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) is building at Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) Stock Island Generating Facility, was delivered and successfully placed onto the plant’s foundation on March 5th.

“This delivery is a major milestone for this new power source, which will provide reliable, efficient power to Key West and the Lower Florida Keys, as well as FMPA’s other member communities,” said FMPA General Manager & CEO Roger Fontes.

The combustion turbine generator and other equipment were shipped by barge from Houston, Texas, to KEYS Stock Island facility, where the new unit will be located. Upon arrival, the turbine and generator components were moved off the barge and lifted by a crane onto the plant’s foundation.

Construction began in November 2005, and the plant is scheduled to become operational this summer.

“While I hope this hurricane season passes uneventful for the Florida Keys,” said KEYS General Manager & CEO Lynne Tejeda, “I am pleased KEYS customers will have another 42 megawatts of energy available to them by the peak of the 2006 season.”

This new unit is a 42 Megawatt low sulfur oil-fueled combustion turbine generator. The combustion turbine will be owned by FMPA and operated by KEYS.

When KEYS began purchasing all its wholesale power from FMPA in 1998, FMPA pledged to maintain on-island generation equivalent to 60 percent of KEYS customers’ electrical demand. On-island generation enables KEYS to continue serving most of its customer even if the tieline is out of service.

FMPA is a wholesale power company owned by 29 municipal electric utilities. FMPA provides economies of scale in power generation and related services to support community-owned electric utilities. The members of FMPA serve approximately 1.8 million Floridians.
