UTILITY BOARD PROCEEDS WITH IMPLEMENTATION OF CONVENIENCE FEES FOR CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS

05/11/2006 ~ The Utility Board agreed to proceed with the implementation of a 2.55 percent convenience fee for credit card payments at their regular meeting on Wednesday, May 10th.

At the February 22nd Utility Board meeting, the Board decided to stop accepting credit card payments for utility bills in-house and to allow a third party provider to accept credit cards on Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) behalf. The third party provider would assess a convenience fee to the customer for the transaction.

KEYS surveyed other municipal utilities in the State and discovered these utilities also use a third party provider who assesses a convenience fee to its customers who pay with credit cards.

The implementation of a convenience fee will save KEYS an estimated $75,000 for the remaining Fiscal Year (October – September) and an estimated $185,000 in Fiscal Year 2007.

The Board also recognized four high school interns for completing the first year of KEYS’ Vocational Education Internship program. KEYS internship program is a part of the Monroe County School Districts Vocational Tech program that allows high school Juniors and Seniors the opportunity to work part-time in area businesses to gain valuable on the job training and better position them to gain employment post graduation.

KEYS interns included: Austin Sands who interned with Fleets; Vinnie Albano who interned with the Electrical section; Kathy Diaz who interned with the Finance department; and Leslie Jernigan who interned with the Control Center.

In other business, the Board:

- Awarded the contract for uniform leasing and mat services to UniFirst Corporation, for an estimated annual cost of $14,386.62, their bid being the lowest cost and/or best bid complying with specifications.

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 10th, in the Louis Carbonell Board Room of the William Arnold Service Building, 1001 James Street, Key West.
