07/24/2006 ~ Otniel ‘Ony’ Mendez, Auto-Diesel Technician, has been named Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) Outstanding Employee of the Third Quarter for 2006.

Mendez has worked for the utility for nearly 18 years and is responsible for the maintenance of all KEYS vehicles and equipment. He said he finds the constant learning environment of his position very rewarding and values the diversity and camaraderie of his co-workers.

Randy Roberts, KEYS Fleets, Facilities, and Warehouse Supervisor, said Mendez, “showed an overwhelming spirit during the 2005 Hurricane Season and the desire to keep KEYS’ fleet of vehicles up and running despite overwhelming odds.”

The Employee of the Quarter Committee selects an employee four times a year for this award. Employees are considered for the award after being nominated by their peers or supervisors. Final selection of the outstanding employee is based on several factors, which include attendance, attitude, efficiency, initiative, and job performance, among others.

Mendez was born in Cuba and moved to Key West in 1980. He is a graduate of Key West High School and lives in Key West with his wife Maritza. In his spare time Mendez enjoys boating and fishing.

The Utility Board will recognize Mendez as the Outstanding Employee of the Third Quarter for 2006 and present him with a $250 bonus during their regular meeting on July 26th. His name will be engraved on a perpetual plaque that hangs in the William Arnold Service Building lobby, and he will receive an extra day off.
