LIGHTNING STRIKE SUSPECTED AS CAUSE OF LATE MORNING TIELINE OUTAGE

09/18/2006 ~ A lightning strike near Bahia Honda is suspected as the cause of the late morning transmission line (tieline) power outage that affected 27,000 Keys Energy Services (KEYS) customers from Key West to Marathon. The system-wide outage lasted approximately 59 minutes.

KEYS customers lost power at 11:17 a.m. All customers were re-energized on or before 12:16 p.m.

KEYS began implementing local generating procedures at approximately 11:30 a.m. in order to supply KEYS customers with power in the event that the tieline could not be re-energized. The tieline was re-energized at 12:00 p.m. and back-up generation was not needed.

KEYS regret any inconveniences experienced as a result of this power outage.
