04/05/2007 ~ Knowledge, strength, agility, and safety were on display as Florida’s top electric linemen and line apprentices recently competed in the Seventh Annual Florida Lineman’s Rodeo in Kissimmee, Florida.

Twenty-two teams representing municipal and electric cooperative utilities from around the state showcased their talents in several real-world events that simulated on-the-job procedures. Such events, like the Hurt-Man Rescue, simulated an emergency procedure where a lineman must climb a 40-foot power pole to aid an injured line worker represented as a 180-pound mannequin. The injured worker must be properly secured and safely lowered to the ground following strict safety procedures.

Linemen Pedro Arencibia, Walter Cashwell, Michael Commander, Albert Fernandez, Russell Free, Tommy Grassi, Scott Morgan, Jerry Pita, and Bryan Veliz represented Keys Energy Services (KEYS) at this year’s showcase.

“The quality of our lineman’s workmanship was superb,” said KEYS General Manger & CEO Lynne Tejeda. She added that, “the annual Lineman’s Rodeo helps KEYS linemen improve upon their craft and trade tricks-of-the-trade with contemporaries throughout the state.”

KEYS Apprentice Lineman Albert Fernandez took home the second place overall trophy amongst his peer group.

For safety purposes, all events were conducted in a non-energized environment.
