PADRON ANNOUNCES HE WILL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION

04/12/2007 ~ Robert R. Padron, Utility Board Chairman, announced at the April 11th Utility Board meeting that he will not seek re-election to the Board in the fall.

“After over 45 years of service to City Electric System and Keys Energy Services (KEYS), I am leaving the Utility in very capable hands both at the Staff and Board levels,” Padron said. “While there is never a good time to leave, I feel now it is time to close this chapter in my life.”

Padron was employed by the Utility from 1961 to 1995, when he retired as General Manager. He has served as Utility Board Chairman since 1995.

As the Utility’s General Manager, Padron oversaw the creation and completion of the Transmission Line (or “tieline”) that interconnected KEYS to the mainland power grid and forever increased local reliability in the 1980s, and the ultimate decommissioning of the Key West Steam Plant in the early 1990s.

During his tenure on the Board, Padron supported capital improvements that dramatically increased reliability, the utility’s name change, and customer satisfaction surveys to help KEYS be responsive to the community it serves.

Lynne Tejeda, KEYS General Manager & CEO, who was originally hired as the Utility’s first full-time communications specialist by Padron, said his presence and breadth of knowledge and expertise will be missed. “Bobby’s vision for Keys Energy has truly shaped this utility. He has provided exceptional leadership in focusing KEYS on being responsive to its ratepayers on all levels including rates, customer service and reliability.”

Padron serves on various committees of the Florida Municipal Power Agency, the American Public Power Association (APPA), and the Florida Municipal Electric Association, where he is a past president. He was also awarded the Spence Vanderlinden Public Official Award by the APPA in 2002.
