02/26/2008 ~ Early afternoon power failures on the Florida mainland initiated a power outage that affected Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) entire service area from Key West to the Seven-Mile Bridge, approximately 28,000 customers, at 1:08 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26th.

The majority of KEYS’ customers, approximately 26,000, were reenergized by 1:39 p.m., with all KEYS’ customers re-energized by, or before, 2:10 p.m.

While the cause of the mainland Florida power failures are still under investigation, KEYS’ customers lost power as a result of the massive power outages affecting central and south Florida. With such large numbers of Florida residents loosing power all at once, the Florida electric grid began “load shedding” in order to preserve those systems not immediately affected by the initial power failures – KEYS was one such utility.

KEYS’ started local generation in order to support voltage levels and assist the situation on the mainland. Approximately 80 megawatts* of power are currently being generated at KEYS’ Stock Island Generating Facility.

KEYS’ customers should note that as mainland Florida residents are brought back online, electrical surges and subsequent power outages may occur as the load on the Florida electric grid is re-established and equalized.

*Megawatt (MW) – A unit of electric real power equal to 1,000 kilowatts or 1,000,000 watts.
