UTILITY BOARD WAIVES SALARY INCREASE TO REDUCE EXPENSES

07/09/2009 ~ At their regular meeting on Wednesday, July 8th, the Utility Board approved a resolution to waive salary increases for the Board Chairman and Members during Fiscal Year* (FY) 2010.

The resolution, proposed by Vice Chairman Peter Batty, reads in part, “the Utility Board recognizes FY 2009 has had lower than budgeted kilowatt hour sales that have significantly reduced revenues and that a similar situation is expected during FY 2010 resulting in a need to reduce expenses where appropriate.”

The current monthly salaries for the Utility Board are $1,179.51 for the Chairman and $984.90 for the remaining Utility Board Members. These will remain unchanged in FY 2010.

Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) Staff also identified over $4.7-million in cuts to the FY 2010 budget to help reduce expenses. Additionally, all merit pay raises for non-Union employees were postponed indefinitely beginning in FY 2009.

“All cuts to our budget have been in an effort to maintain reliability, and a knowledgeable workforce, while mitigating the rate impact on our customers,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS’ General Manager & CEO.

The first Utility Board Budget Workshop for FY 2010 is scheduled for July 22nd. The aforementioned cuts were made in advance of the workshop to help develop the FY 2010 budget.

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 8th, in the Louis Carbonell Board Room of the William Arnold Service Building, 1001 James Street, Key West.

*KEYS’ Fiscal Year runs from October 1st – September 30th.
