HEART SCULPTURE FINDS A HOME IN KEYS POCKET PARK IN TIME FOR VALENTINE’S DAY

02/08/2010 ~ In a continuing effort to beautify the community and bring art in to local neighborhoods, Keys Energy Services (KEYS) and Sculpture Key West recently unveiled a new sculpture at KEYS’ Alvin Frazier III Memorial Park, on the corner of Flagler Avenue and Eighteenth Street.

Thomas Mann’s Trajectory Heart was recently placed in the park in an ongoing partnership with Sculpture Key West and their art in the community program.

Mann was an artist in residence at The Studios of Key West (TSKW) during the winter of 2009 when he created Heart. The sculpture is the outcome of his Storm Cycle Series, based on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. He created this series using his signature collage-assemblage style and materials gathered from the streets of New Orleans post-Katrina.

The sculpture will remain on display in the Pocket Park for two years before it is returned to the artist.

The Alvin Frazier III Memorial Park is one of four such parks that have been converted by KEYS from outdated substations into spaces for the community and surrounding neighborhoods to enjoy. The Alvin Frazier III Memorial Park, along with the Grinnell Street and Gato Village Pocket Parks, feature sculptures for the visual enjoyment of the community.
