04/15/2010 ~ The Utility Board awarded a unit price contract for re-wiring approximately three-miles of the Transmission Line (TIELINE) to Motor City Electric Utilities Co. for an estimated amount of $899,878.46 at their regular meeting on Wednesday, April 14th.

Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) existing 69 Kilovolt (kV)* TIELINE was constructed in 1962 and spans the distance between the Kennedy Drive and White Street Electrical Substations. Approximately two-miles of the span are over water and runs parallel to the Sigsbee Navy Base and the Hilton Haven neighborhood, less than 1-mile is over land. The existing wire is in poor condition due to age and the extreme corrosive environment of the Florida Keys.

“The span of the TIELINE being refurbished is a redundant line that loops around the city of Key West and serves as a back-up to the system,” said Lynne Tejeda, KEYS’ General Manager & CEO. She added that, “planned outages are not anticipated during the construction period.”

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 14th, in the Louis Carbonell Board Room of the William Arnold Service Building, 1001 James Street, Key West.

*Kilovolt – A unit of electrical force equal to 1,000 volts.
