12/20/2010 ~ On December 31, 2010, Keys Energy Services’ (KEYS) Jose Raul Del Rio will retire after 30-years of service to the public power provider for Key West and the Lower Florida Keys.

Del Rio was originally hired by KEYS in 1981, when City Electric System still graced the Utility’s letterhead. Throughout his tenure Del Rio held numerous positions within the Utility, including Security Guard and General Helper, prior to ending his career as an Apprentice Maintenance Person.

Reflecting on the biggest changes that took place during his tenure, Del Rio said it was, “when the Key West Steam Plant was decommissioned and the TIELINE was constructed, which improved reliability and eliminated brown-outs and power rotations.” When asked about his most memorable experience at KEYS, Del Rio could not pick one but rather added, “everyday has been memorable.”

In reminiscing about his time at KEYS, Del Rio said he will miss working with his friends, and when asked about the secret to his longevity attributed it to, “enjoying doing my job and working with great friendly people.”

Del Rio plans to spend more time with his wife and family in retirement and to dedicate more time to traveling, fishing, bicycling, and following his favorite sport teams. After a 30-year career at KEYS, he has more than earned the right to make his own schedule for the next chapter in his life.
