06/25/2012 ~ Utility Board chairman Lou Hernandez recently received the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Spence Vanderlinden Public Official Award at the Association’s national conference in Seattle, Washington. The award recognizes elected or appointed officials whose contributions to APPA and their communities have enhanced the prestige of public power nationally.

In addition to serving on APPA’s Policy Makers Council and the Florida Municipal Power Agency’s (FMPA) Board of Directors and Policy Makers Liaison Committee, Hernandez has remained a tireless advocate for public power by spearheading community and national efforts. For Keys Energy Services (KEYS), Hernandez was vital in the creation of an innovative solar demonstration partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and FMPA and the expansion of the local fiber optic communications infrastructure. Thanks in part to his support for green initiatives; KEYS recently received a Clean Energy Grant from the state of Florida.

* The American Public Power Association is the service organization for the nation’s more than 2,000 community-owned electric utilities that serve more than 46-million Americans. More info at
