02/02/2004 ~ James McClendon, Keys Energy Services (KEYS) generation supervisor, recently received a $500.00 award for an idea that will save the utility over $6,500.00 annually.

McClendon developed a computerized training manual for the Operations Section at the Stock Island Power Plant.

KEYS general manager, Carl Jansen, said that, “not only did James offer an idea that could save time and money, but he took the idea and made it a reality.”

In an effort to increase efficiency, morale, safety, and reduce costs, McClendon put together a 10 volume set of computerized instructions, with corresponding pictures, that walk auxiliary and control room operators through procedures with little or no assistance.

Procedures outlined in instructions include everything from how to start up the Combustion Turbines and Medium Speed Diesels, to how to conduct end of the month readings on equipment.

McClendon submitted his award-winning idea through KEYS’ Employee Suggestion Program (ESP). Through ESP, employees who suggest valuable ideas on how KEYS can improve reliability, productivity, and efficiency are recognized and rewarded.

“Employees see ways to improve efficiency, but frequently don’t volunteer their ideas,” Jansen said. “ESP not only encourages employees to share their ideas, but also rewards employees who offer an efficiency improvement.”

ESP is administered by the Economic Development / New Technology Committee, chaired by Alex Tejeda, customer services director, and employees from various departments in the utility. Lou Hernandez is the Utility Board’s representative on the committee.
