12/11/2014 ~ The Utility Board approved the Unit Purchase Price for ductile iron power poles to Electric Supply, Inc. for an estimated total cost of $117,026 during their regular meeting on Wednesday, December 10th.

Keys Energy Servicesí (KEYS) Standards Committee continuously investigates new and proven technologies to improve the operations of the local electric grid. The committee proposed a two-year pilot program to evaluate the effectiveness of ductile iron power poles for future projects and recommended the purchase of 34 test poles.

Ductile iron is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron has high impact and fatigue resistance due to its nodular graphite inclusions.

Ductile iron power poles are lighter, easier to transport, and quicker to install than their concrete counterparts. Ductile iron poles also withstand the same wind speed tolerances as storm hardened concrete poles as required by the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC), while having half their footprint size. The FPSC requires that all new poles installed in the Florida Keys be rated to withstand category-five hurricane force winds in excess of 150 miles-per-hour.

In other business, the Board approved the purchase of a new budget and financial model software to NewGen Strategies & Solutions, LLC. for a total cost of $65,010. The new software will replace manually created budget spreadsheets and will allow for greater planning flexibility during the budget process.

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place at 5:00 p.m., December 10th, in the Louis Carbonell Board Room of the William Arnold Service Building, 1001 James Street, Key West.
