01/14/2016 ~ The Utility Board approved the Unit Purchase Price for over 600 ductile iron power poles to McWane Poles for an estimated total cost of $1.47-million during their regular meeting on Wednesday, January 13th.

The purchase of the ductile iron poles is in conjunction with Keys Energy Servicesí storm hardening project, which is a multi-year capital project scheduled to begin in June 2016, the on-going easement relocation project, and to replenish inventory stock levels.

Ductile iron is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron has high impact and fatigue resistance due to its nodular graphite inclusions.

Ductile iron power poles are 1/3 the weight of concrete poles, easier to transport, and more efficient to install. Ductile iron poles also withstand the same wind speed tolerances as storm hardened concrete poles as required by the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC). The FPSC requires that all new poles installed in the Florida Keys be rated to withstand category-five hurricane force winds up to 150 miles-per-hour.

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place at 5:00 p.m., January 13th, in the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority Board Room, 1100 Kennedy Drive, Key West.
