UTILITY BOARD APPROVES UTILIZING BP SETTLEMENT FUNDS FOR LED LIGHTING SYSTEM UPGRADE AT KWHS SPORTS COMPLEX

04/29/2016 ~ Keys Energy Services (KEYS) recently approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Monroe County School Board for a Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting system upgrade at the Key West High School (KWHS) sports complex on Kennedy Drive. The upgrade will be funded by a portion of the $1.5-million in British Petroleum (BP) settlement money KEYS received.

“The Utility Board stated that their preference was to spend the BP money on local environmental initiatives,” said Lynne Tejeda, General Manager & CEO. She added that, “The LED lighting system will replace existing lights at the KWHS sports complex with new low-voltage, high energy efficient LED lights.”

As part of the MOU, KEYS will contribute up to $455,000 for the actual cost of the lighting system and provide in-kind services for site work. The School Board will be responsible for bidding and procurement and all operating and maintenance costs.

The bid will be awarded to a lighting vendor at the School Board meeting tentatively scheduled for May 24th. Upgrades will take place over the summer months with the goal of having all lighting upgrades complete by the start of the 2016 football season.

The regular meeting of the Utility Board took place at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 29th, in the Board Room of Keys Energy Services’ Service Building, 1001 James Street, Key West
